Hello Scotty,
What should I choose for a reliable commuter between a 2008 Civic 1.8 automatic and a 2013 Yaris 1.33 manual (both gasoline and about the same mileage - 70.000)? I would like to keep it for at least 5 years.
Thank you!
Both can go a long time. The Yaris is more basic and will have less headaches, but if you want to modify your car the Civic is your bet.
Those older Civics were made very well and can go over 200,000 miles easily. As long as it was well-maintained, the Civic will be your best bet in my opinion. If you do your own maintenance, the Civic will also be easier to maintain. Whichever car you go with, always have a good mechanic check it out before you buy it. Good luck!
The 1.33 Toyota engine is a very good engine and those Yarises tend to last a very long time. The Civic is also a good vehicle and better if you want to modify it. Keep in mind the Yaris is a subcompact and the Civic is a compact vehicle, so the Civic would be a bit larger.
Good luck!
Honeslty if you just need an A to B car, get the Yaris.
If you want a bit more space and some personality, get the Civic.
Thank you! I'm also leaning toward the Yaris because is newer and I think will have less problems. I test drived the Civic and I liked it a lot, but I'm afraid because its older and things might start to fall.
My heart wants the Civic, but my mind tells me to get the Yaris {black}
@cristian_buliga The heart wants what the heart wants! Just don’t forget to do the PPI on the Civic..
Well the Yaris is 9 years old, and the Civic is 14 years old.
Keep the Yaris as a top choice for you, but keep on looking at 2010+ vehicles with less than 100k miles and see if you can find a Toyota/Honda you like. You might even find a newer Civic!
The Yaris certainly is very run of the mill basic car so less cheaply made electonic stuff to go wrong....
I'd have a mechanic check both of them out. Odds are one will have more problems than the other, and you could buy accordingly.
Good luck!
In thrust We trust is refering to the Pre-Purchase mechanical Inspection. You want to get it done for both. Maybe a major problem is prevalent but you don't notice it. Maybe the Yaris has a major problems and the Civic was cared for with no problems, in that case get the Civic. Maybe the Civic has too many small problems but the Yaris is just fine, then get the Yaris.
If you can get your hands on service records, then that would make you get a more informed decision.
Linked next to my profile on my first answer there is a "Used Car Buying Guide" that many members compiled together, take a look at that as well.
My take: its low miles and if the Civic is in good shape, get it! If the Yaris seems like it was taken care of and fits your function, consider buying that.
My mind is telling me Yaris, but my heart is telling me Civic. Both great choices.
The Yaris if you want a micro mini, the Civic if you want a sub compact.
As with any used car, have it inspected by a professional mechanic, before you buy it.
The Yaris should be more reliable, since it’s a manual.
You like how the Civic drives, but think the Yaris is newer and would give you less problems...
Have you checked out a Honda Jazz/Fit? You would be able to get a newer ones because its the same size as the Yaris (in fact a bit larger on the inside) but is more fun to drive like the Civic.
