I have a 1986 Chevrolet Scottsdale half ton with a 305, It shifts hard, I brought it to a transmission shop and the mechanic there said I need a new carburetor? Something about a TV cable? What on earth? What does a carburetor have to do with a transmission? I would appreciate your input thanks

TV = throttle valve

The transmission needs to know how much sauce you're givin'er to modulate shift firmness, and also to downshift when you're passing. You will damage the trans if it's not hooked up properly.

The TV cable is attached to the throttle lever and makes the trans down shift when you step on the gas.  There are detailed instructions for the correct adjustment of the TV cable in the Haynes manual and online.  I would have that adjusted properly BEFORE thinking about getting a new (and expensive) carburetor.  Your mechanic may be too young to know how this system works if he's only been dealing with fuel injection all the time.
