Hi Scotty,
I was told my catalytic converter is likely bad as it makes the horrible smell of a bad cat and end of my exhaust so extremely black and even has blackened the car bumper. I was told it could be replaced, removed or put holes in it. I live in a state with no emission laws or checks. I've seen people do straight pipe but they are embarrassingly loud. Can you place explain risk of putting a hole and what other options besides spend tons of money on a new cat when the car is so old it may not be worst the money to replace the cat.
Thanks! 🙂
Putting holes in the cat is a bad idea. Them exhaust gases can make it into the passenger cabin. Especially when the windows are up and you are running the AC or heat in the winter. What I have seen people do is remove the cat, bust out the contents and put an empty shell back on. Problem is your car’s computer is programmed to run with that back pressure. Unless you have the money to have someone reprogram your car, your best bet would be to buy a bolt on direct fit aftermarket one. They usually run 75-200 bucks max. On side note the black build up in your tailpipe isn’t from a bad cat. You are either running way to rich, or you are burning oil. You should have a mechanic determine which.
Oh okay! Good to know! Thank you! Yes, the car does burn oil pretty bad. Thanks for the help!
Replacr your PCV valve,
When they clog they can make you burn oil.
