Been wondering what cars/trucks/minivans Scotty would recommend that, while not as good as Toyota or Honda, can be decent if they are taken care of. Obviously the caveats are that they have to be in good shape to start with if used, the fluid and maintenance schedules would need to be rigorously followed. High quality synthetic oils and gas will likely need to be used, etc.
Oh, and no cheating. He can't recommend cars that have Toyota or Honda engines under another brand name, lol.
The reason I ask is, I own a Hyundai Veloster that's been working out really well for me. It's a 2014 which seems to be before Hyundai started having those bad oil burning problems, and a manual transmission so I don't have to worry about the auto transmission problems they have.
However, I frequently maintenance my mother-in-laws Rav4 and I can clearly tell the quality difference. The only reason I didn't go Toyota is that the seat positioning and leg room are too small for me. I can't drive them for very long without getting very uncomfortable hip and lower back pain.
Also, sometimes it can be hard to find a good Toyota or Honda if you're on a really tight budget and a time crunch. So I thought it would be helpful to know alternatives that if checked out, are in good shape, and you know you'll really take care of them, they can be decent cars. They may not last as long as a Toyota, but won't be an endless money pit like an Audi. 😉
For modern cars I like the majority of Subarus and Mazdas, if were talking like 15-20 years old Ford and GM had some pretty good cars too. Id just avoid a Kia, Dodge, and most german cars. But, it often depends on the car itself. Sometimes you get a lousy company that makes a great car, sometimes you get a great company that makes a bad car. It really depends.
Subaru is another one of those cars I can not seem to get a good fit on as a driver. My mom has an Outback and it's a nice car, kills me if I have to drive it for more than 30 minutes. So weird too because it has good legroom, I can adjust the seat every which way of Sunday, just never can get it to a comfortable position.
I haven't tried a lot of Mazdas. One time we tried a CX-9. I loved it, but my wife didn't like how touchy it was with the steering. It was mainly her car so we ended up with a Traverse instead. The newer Mazda 3s with the turbo look great. Even has a manual transmission option, bet that would be a lot of fun to drive and comfortable as well.
In some videos Scotty mentions other cars. Ford Crown Victoria is one of them that I remember from his videos.
