Topic starter
  • 2019 Mazda CX-5
  • Only owner of the vehicle and I use the vehicle about 150 miles a day. Just hit 33,000 miles on a trip to the mountains and CEL came on as I was coasting down between 11,000 ft and 9,000 ft.
  • Dealer confirmed same code I did and said Catalytic converter is bad
  • Drove about a 100 miles since CEL and now it went away, back at 5,400 ft where I usually drive.
  • does the elevation have anything to do with my issue? Is the CAT really just bad or is something else at play? What would you do?

Higher octane gas may give ya a little more life from cat and you might get lucky and last a long time. And let car warm up (hot cat) before ya start driving.  Check ltft to insure no rich mixture too.  Don't recall if that one is picky about oem cat but always better to do cat oem unless you have KNOWN experience with that vehicle and the cat your putting in.  If/when code frequent, replace cat as it will start affecting other things.

If after 1 month and no codes, you can switch back to factory recommended octane and see what happens.

Wait for more errors.

Will do, or let the dealer do the warranty work for cat and shocks and then sell it?

If it's warranty work and it's free why not?
