Hi Scotty,
I have 2014 hyundai elantra 1.8 automatic with 88K miles on it.
When engine is cold it has knocking noise which disappears in several minutes after engine is started.
No power loss, no oil burn, no any other issues, car runs very well. Is it safe to drive with this issue? For how long will it last?
Thank you!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Hyundai. It probably has a defect and they are going to do all they can to avoid touching it under warranty.
Hard to say but make a video and put it on YouTube and post the link here and I will listen
See this, from Hyundai: https://www.hyundai-forums.com/attachments/hyundaibulletinoilfilter-pdf.378705/
Hyundai is blaming aftermarket oil filters.
Hyundai fails to offer up an explanation of how this is so, although there's some chatter on the forum conjecturing that these are really cheap filters, and so restrict less (hence less knocking). (The commenter on the forum likened a Hyundai filter to "swiss cheese." If that's true, it's hardly a reassuring "fix."
Does it sound like this?

Sorry for delay... here is how it sounds
...and this is what I have found also

- Yes, but my warranty is expired already. I went to dealership and showed them these bulletins but they only say "there is no recall for your vehicle".
Hyundai is blaming aftermarket oil filters.
- I always use OEM filters. And never miss oil change interval.
Does it sound like this?
- Worse, I believe... 🙁
Damn.... I would get rid of that thing, before it starts sucking your $$$ in repairs.
Yes... I am thinking about buying honda civic, new or used...
Go right ahead! If buying used, be sure to have it inspected by a professional mechanic, before purchase.
Scotty, what do you think about this noise?
