Please settle argument between husband and wife

Hey Scotty,

my wife swears that the trick to a long AC life in a car is to turn it off every time you shut the car off. Her father taught her that years ago. I said it doesn’t matter. Then the AC in my 2011 focus went out while her 2011 fusion is still ice cold. Was she right? Should I turn the AC to off before I shut off the car?

In modern cars with electronic or digital switches, I don’t think it really matters.

In older cars, with analog switches, turning it off may play a small role (like super duper small) in promoting longevity of the AC system.

Not in a modern car. Atleast I don’t practise it and none of the modern cars I’ve driven, have seemed to care.

I always turn everything off in a car before I shut it down.

If that's all I disagreed with my wife about, I'd still be married. Does she turn off the radio before shutting off the engine?

I usually turn it off on my car ('19) that's parked in the garage. Not because that's what you did back in the day, just don't want it on when I start it the next morning. Generally don't need it running at 7am, and besides I don't like the puddle it leaves behind on the garage floor. The pickup ('17) which is our dog hauler is parked outside and I just shut it off. Don't think it make a difference, if it's your AC's time to go then it's time is up.
