PO 138 Code on a 2009 Matrix

Hello all!

I have a 2009 Matrix, with the 1.8L. I'm at about 92800 miles and I have a check engine light that comes and goes. I used a code reader and got PO138.

My mechanic said I need a new O2 sensor and need my computer reprogrammed (for about 750 mind you...).

I got a second opinion and was told that I might not need a new sensor and that it is just a wiring issue since it comes and goes. What do I do? Do I take it in to have the O2 sensor fixed and see if the issue goes away? Is there a fuse or something that I could change to see if that works? If it's a wiring issue, would replacing the sensor fix that?

Thank you in advance!

realize the systems are extremely complex but the rear sensor is much cheaper than the front one I would just advise replacing the rear sensor buy one at AutoZone they're very liberal return policies if it doesn't fix it then I would return it and replace the front one

Thank you so much! 🙂
