[Solved] Power steering pump big leak

My power steering has been malfunctioning and would go empty in a few days since I bought my 1998 Toyota Camry. Now when I add more fluid to my empty reservoir, it empties completely again in less than a minute. Before I filled the reservoir, I raised the front end and tire to reveal the pump. And after pouring the fluid I noticed the pump it self rapidly leaking all the fluid I just poured. It was leaking in the area where the pump was connected to the belt-wheel. Am I able to remove the pump completely and drive safely without power steering and not damaging anything else on the car?

Even large heavy cars and trucks used to come with non-power steering, but they were geared for more mechanical advantage and frequently would have large steering wheels - slower steering at less effort.  Your steering is geared with less mechanical advantage and a smaller steering wheel, designed to work with power assist to keep the effort required reasonable.

I do not believe you will damage anything running that way but the question is can you safely handle the car without the power assist?

It’d be nice to drive a Rambler, and yes I can handle the pressure. I’ve already been doing it for about two weeks now as this is my only vehicle. It’s more of an annoyance that I’m now able to tolerate until the pump gets fixed/replaced. I just wanted to know if it was ok for the car w/o the pump so thank you for your answer.

The steering does become manual without the power steering pump but it is not a good idea to drive it like that all the time because it will cause the vehicle to be harder to handle. You should also check the lines to make sure they are not bad.

Thanks, the lines are good as I said that the pump itself is draining the fluid in seconds on its own. I know the steering is rough. But I’m asking if it would be ok for my car if I remove the broken pump and drive without it until I fix/replace it?

I say dont remove it because the serpentine belt wont fit if you take it off

I have to remove it as I said, the pump is malfunctioning, not the power steering system, but the pump itself. I have been driving without the power steering functioning for a couple weeks now, it’s not that much of a problem for now until I can fix it. I need to examine it to see if I can fix the pump or if I’ll have to replace it. So I need to know if after I remove it, is it ok for the rest of my car to be missing the pump?

If you actually remove the pump you'd need a shorter belt and figure out a way to route it. Problem with leaving the pump on with no fluid is it's getting no lubrication and may seize up.
