Rattling 2005 Toyota Highlander

I currently own a 2005 Toyota Highlander with 103k miles on it. It generally runs well, but I get an intermittent rattling noise when the car is idling especially when my foot is on the brake. Sometimes it sounds like this is coming from under the hood and sometimes from the rear of the vehicle. When driving it runs smooth and I don't notice any unusual noises when driving and it seems to perform well. No lights are on in the dash and nothing is showing on my Bluetooth scanner. I am thinking something is loose somewhere. Any advice?

Check underneath the car for any loose thing, from heat shields to different parts of the exhaust.

My scion would do this, until the guy at local shop tightened them up a couple of months back.

Intermittent rattling or anything intermittent is difficult to pin down. But remember it's a 16 year old vehicle. My 08 Highlander make some rattling noises more in the cold weather months that don't seem to be there (or a least not noticeable) in spring and summer. It's old and not going to be perfectly quiet anymore.

If you want to pinpoint the rattle, use this method -
