Rattling Noise in Front Passenger Side at 65mph plus

I have a peugeot 3008, 1.6 diesel 2012 with 150k miles, electronic gear control transmission. I get a loud rattling noise on my front passenger side when I drive at about 70mph which does not normally occur at lower speeds. I've checked my struts and suspensions but no leaks that are obvious, dry as a bone as Scotty would say! I've replaced the left side stabiliser link as there was very slight play on it but it has made no difference to the noise. I don't mind the noise, I just turn the radio up but I'm worried the noise may mean something is damaged and could be serious trouble later if it stays unfixed. Any ideas what it could be and how I could fix it? Thank you in advance from the UK!

Watch Scotty’s video on how to find the source of car noises.

Have you checked for any loose bolts?

Also, do you feel the rattling in the steering wheel too?

@inthrustwetrust - thank you for your reply. I have watched the video, I guess I wanted to do it without having to buy the equipment he used. The steering wheel doesn't rattle and the only place I could think a bolt is loose is inside the door possibly. I always inflate my tyres on full load guidance (rear at 44 psi and front at 36 psi) as I carry a lot of stock sometimes, so when the boot is empty, would it make a difference? It's the fact that it rattles above 70mph which has me stumped.

It can be hard to find a noise doing 70 but I did use a stethoscope that helped a lot.  Noises are magnified 'at speeds" become more softened at idle.  I used the scope on moving parts in motor and have found chatter in certain cylinders or a alternator.

Back to another oldtime story, I had a 63 SS Impala that had a "damned rattle" that made wife real mad.  I didn't care so much because it was only bad on ruff roads.  So, after wife forced me to find that "damned rattle" I started digging.  I checked rear suspension, universals and even ran without hubcaps for awhile.  Finally I sat in the rear seat while wife drove.  The knocking was inside the side panel on the passenger side.  Seems during break time the assembler left his coke bottle there to keep the assembly line clean.  Always keep the mind open and "follow the data".

@jimz
That's a brilliant anecdote with the coke bottle! incidentally, it was also my wife that the noise drives mad and I never noticed it before she mentioned it. Moral of the story is ti turn the music even louder to drown out the noise of both the car and wife!

Left motor mount moving enough with that 1.6 screaming has a exhaust hanger snapped 🤨

@heyinway
That sounds bad, i'll check it out thanks.

Nothing is impossible but everything else is improbable.

You might want to check for any loose exhaust heat shields - they often cause hard to find rattles. Also, check for any loose plastic panels on the underneath of your car -these days manufacturers put a lot of plastic panels on the cars underside for better aerodynamics, and if one of them is loose, if can cause a rattle at speed.

@glen_stet
thank you, i'll check it out though I noticed anything when I last had it lifted up to change some fluids.

Do you only hear the noise or you have some shaking on the steering wheel too?

@yaser
No shaking on the steering wheel, just the noise

Check the motor and transmission mounts.
