Restoring a Caprice

Topic starter

I am restoring a 1988 Caprice Classic Brougham. It has been in storage since 2010. It was in excellent condition with no mechanical issues when put into storage but has basically sat ever since. The engine is not seized. Other then changing the fuel, oil, plugs and tires. What major issues should I keep on eye out for?  Thank you so much for any advice! -Dawn

You didn't state which engine the car has but the concerns would be the same for all of them.

You'll also need to change out coolant and brake fluid. Check carefully for hydraulic leaks. Replace rubber brake hoses.

Rubber seals in engine and transmission may leak due to long-term lack of lubrication. The entire fuel system will need to be cleaned and flushed out and rubber parts replaced - any gasoline that was in the car in 2010 will have long since turned into varnish. Overhaul or replace the carburetor.

You might want to put a little Marvel Mystery Oil into the cylinders before starting it up to make sure cylinders are lubricated. Also a good idea to prime the oil system before starting the engine.
