Hello,
I have a 2012 Scion xB with automatic transmission with 110,000 miles. The car does not shift automatically into top gear at freeway speeds. It usually give me a check engine light with a P0741 code. After some fresh Toyota transmission fluid, the code went away for about 900 miles, but now it comes back frequently. It also often disappears on its own too. I have taken it to two transmission shops and a Toyota dealership, and they all agree that the transmission should be replaced. One of the transmission shops came to that conclusion after looking at the car for 3 days. To replace the transmission with a genuine Toyota one is about $4,000 for the transmission and about $1,000 in labor. (This quote was from a Toyota dealer. More expensive, I know, but the transmission shop told me they would have to buy the transmission from Toyota to replace it anyway). The other option that the dealer offered me was an aftermarket transmission installed by them. $1,200 for the transmission and $1,000 labor for about $2,200. Quite a price split between $5,000 and $2,200. What should I do?
No one told me what was wrong precisely. The place that kept if for 3 days didn’t charge me for the appraisal though, which was nice.
