I've heard they are nearly identical cars. And since Pontiac isn't around anymore, I thought it would be a cheaper option.

Yes, they are cheaper. The powertrain and brake system are the same.

Make sure you get one with the 1.8 L and not the 2.4 L engine. My wife has a 2003 vibe, and I have a 2003 matrix. I prefer the outer trim on the Pontiac. The trim pieces on the bottom of the Toyota are too low to the ground, and they are easy to pop off.
