I have a 2012 Dodge ram 1500 pick up with a 5.7 hemi engine that I purchased in 2017 for 18 K. Current mileage is about 153,000, and it has a couple minor scratches other than that it is a good looking ALL Black crew cab 2WD pickup.
The truck ran pretty good until last year it started miss firing and it has been diagnosed with the roller cam issue and broken camshaft. I’ve been quoted $3500 to repair & $7200ish to replace the engine. Repair would be for the one issue, replacing gives me 3 year warranty on entire motor... OR i could sell the truck as is for about $7k and just eat the loss 😢 The truck has a few other minor problems like the AM/FM radio doesnt always work unless you knock it upside the head, lol
It also needs some side steps added so my sweet little wifey can climb up into the cab, right now she has to jump up pretty high which she is getting tired of doing!
I am a 100% disabled veteran living in the Middle TN area in case there is anyone who would be willing to help me repair it?
I believe Scotty lives fairly close to me and i would love his opinion please
Thanks a million in advance!
Dave
These Hemis are famous for roller lifters failing and eating cams. I would have the roller lifters and the cam replaced with quality, aftermarket parts and get another 150,000 miles out of it.
$7200 for a new motor or $45-70k for a new truck 🤷♂️ Easy choice for me. Radio is probably an easy fix. Whatever you decide, Good luck.
I would replace the motor. Just make sure that it's a remanufactured engine.
I wouldn't sell it because I don't think you'll find a buyer with a serious engine issue.
