Hello! I am look to buy a 2012 Subaru Outback Limited Premium. 4cyl CVT 117k on the car. CARFAX says it’s a 1 owner car. The timing chain was change at 100k. Is there anything I should be aware about these cars? Are they good reliable car or should I move on?

thank you

Welcome new member.

I don’t know that any 10 year old CVT with 100,000 miles is a great idea.  But other than that it should be ok.  The 4-cylinder was pretty good that year.

in general:

  • Find out why the previous owner is selling it (not why they are telling you they’re selling it)
  • Pay for a professional prepurchase inspection from a mechanic who knows Subarus
  • Check the archives in the search bar above; Subaru has been discussed extensively.  Subarus probably have more strong pros and cons than about any other make.
  • Check car complaints.com
  • There is a YouTube channel from a Subaru mechanic from South Carolina (Mr Subaru 1387) who has a good archive of info on older Subaru’s. (Interestingly, I don’t think he and Scotty have always seen eye to eye.  But if you’re gonna depend on a 10 year old car to get you around, it can be good to get contrary opinions)

The CVT is very likely getting near the end of its useful life. Replacement of a Subaru CVT runs about $8000. Also if the timing chain needed replacement at 100K miles that suggests the car did not receive frequent enough oil changes.
