should I change oil filter ?

Doing 6 month oil change and have on it the best aftermarket oil filter on the shelf in Australia rated for 10,000–but I only have a cheap (new boxed) oil filter to replace it; would you reuse the expensive one another 6 months, or, put on the cheap new filter until the next change?

I guess the cheap one meets The Australian standard….

thanks

Oil & oil filters should be changed every 5000 miles or once a year. Oil change intervals should include a new oil filter along with fresh oil. It's nonsensical to use a dirty oil filter, that's a terrible idea.

    The oil turns black after about 3000kms and this time I am planning to use 10W-50 Pentrite oil as reviews mention that oil keep its golden colour after 5000kms.

Your idea will wind up consuming more oil over time, not to mention, -50 weight oil is meant for old cars like my '79 Pontiac Catalina, not a 2011 RAV 4. Your variable valve timing will also be negativity impacted. I don't even use 50-weight oil in my Pontiac. I use 10W-40, because I tend to drive on the highway and the car doesn't have overdrive. Your car has overdrive. Use the oil that's required, this is in your owner's manual.

Oil turning black is fine after 3000 km. There are detergents in the oil that pick up crud and gunk leftover from the combustion proces. The crud gets into the solution so you can drain it out instead of being stuck in the engine. I would be skittish of any product claiming you can get 5000 km and the oil still look the same. Oil that does that most likely doesn't have nearly the same degree of detergents.

that means it's doing it's job.

I normally do my own oil & filter changes and use 5W-30 oil with OEM filters for my RAV 4-2011. The oil turns black after about 3000kms and this time I am planning to use 10W-50 Pentrite oil as reviews mention that oil keep its golden colour after 5000kms. Also my engine consumes little bit of oil and normally I top up 500ml every 2000kms. One thing I noticed about two years ago: I did my car serviced by an independent shop in Dandenong and they have not replace my OEM filter but use the same one again. Maybe my OEM filter is better than their cheap filter.

@camry A quick internet search came up with 0W-20 or 5W-20 for a RAV 4-2011. Oil weight recommendations are based on crankshaft bearing clearance because that's what creates the oil pressure. Most people think the oil pump creates oil pressure, but the pressure comes from squeezing the oil between the crankshaft journal and crankshaft main bearings. Running too thick of an oil for the bearing clearance will probably restrict oil flow and lead to low oil pressure. Thick oil is best suited for engines with large bearing clearances with enough room for the thick oil to flow through. Otherwise it's like trying to drink a thick milkshake through a straw.

@Oskool nice synopsis 👍 .
