Should I have my son's engine replaced?

My son somehow failed to keep the proper amount of motor oil in his 2015 6 cylinder Chevy Impala with 112,000 miles. According to the local Chevy dealer the motor has ceased and can be replaced for about $5200. Is it worth replacing?

Is that for a used engine? Labor alone costs $$$$, let alone the cost of a rebuilt engine.

Kelly Blue Book pegs the value of that car at about $5500, so probably not worth it. You could easily spend all that money on the engine and then have the transmission crater on you.

Not many cars warrant a $5000+ repair bill. That’s not one of them.

No, @chucktobias 's opinion should be heeded on this. Sinking that much money into that car, no way.

Since the car is about 8 years old, the warranty for the car is expired, so there's no need to take it to a dealer. See what an independent garage will charge you to replace the engine with one from a salvage yard.  They might have a way to locate a similar car that was rear ended but the engine still works and costs less.

For an Impala? No. Save your money for a Toyota.
