Hello, I own a 1986 Toyota Camry with 178k miles. (no codes)
I've got some belt squeaks, I have to give it some gas on a cold start and the brakes are squishy (but at least they're working). It's got stock everything as far as I can tell, except the stereo. I've also removed the muffler
Should I keep the car? It burns a lot of oil and I was thinking about getting a 90s Civic after I've saved up some more cash.
I personally would keep it and drive it until the wheels fell off. But I like older Japanese cars that still work with proper maintainence.
But have somebody bleed your brakes, please. You might be driving behind me and need to stop!
How much oil does it burn ??? Get the squishy brakes taken care of. It stops, but that's not a condition to keep driving safely. Could be air in the lines, but at that age it can also be the rubber brake lines starting to deteriorate. Otherwise, keep it going. You can still save up for that 90's Civic.
I was told that the squishy brakes were actually fine for the age of the car, but I felt maybe it could have been worse. They only *feel* squishy, I can stop perfectly fine and haven't had any issues in that regard.
And I'm not sure how much oil it burns, I haven't had the car long enough to check. I've recently done an oil change on it though.
Just drive it into the ground and don't put much money into it.
Update: I've just checked the underside of the car and noticed that my brake lines are leaking a little in the rear at both wheels, and my oil pan is leaking.
I thought maybe there was an oil leak, just didn't know where it was. It's leaking from the top of the oil pan, where it bolts to the car. I forgot to take a picture before I brought it back down, but I'll go out and get one.
