Shutter when shifting to Overdrive

I have a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria LX with only 125k on it. It has been driven seldom over the past 8 years and just recently started taking it out more. Transmission shifts fine and until the last hundred miles when going into overdrive it started making a shudder and briefly makes a sound of running over the rumble strips on side of the highway. Any pointers will be tremendously appreciated.

This is your TCC failing. If the car is OBD1 you can splice a resistor to bypass the TCC and fool the PCM. If you use the larger wirewound resistors I'd also wire in a diode to be safe. Check around for ohm value of the solonoid and a schematic for the polarity of the diode. If it's OBD2 you need to program out the TCC lockup. There will be naysayers saying no no it will overheat the transmission. BS. I've done this to two cars and drove tens of thousands of miles over years and had zero issues. They have no proof of anything. I have personal experience. My cars were GM but its the same issue. Good luck.

Hi @RJB3, welcome to the forum. I’d like to point out that when you post a potential solution to another member’s question, it’s a good idea to type it in the ‘Your Answer’ box at the bottom of the page, rather than using the comment option. That way, if the question has been successfully answered, we can mark the question as solved. Once again welcome and enjoy Scotty’s brand new forum.

Odds are that your overdrive gear is going out.
