Scotty-I have a 2003 Ford Excursion 4x4 with 6.9l V-10. When I get in first thing in the morning, I start it up and put it in reverse and back out of the garage-no problem. I stop completely-and then put it into drive. After maybe a 1 second pause, there is a sound which builds into a large clunk that shakes the vehicle. I can actually feel it in my seat as if someone took a Paul Bunyan size sledge hammer and it something in the rear end. After that, it drives fine. I drive 40 miles-stop and put into reverse followed by the shift to drive to pull it into a parking space and there is no noise, no clunk or anything. It sits for 10 hours before I go home. The same sequence of events occurs as they did first thing in the morning. I greased the slip yolk about 2 months ago and I had the fluid changed in the front and rear differentials and transfer case about a 6 weeks ago. Please offer a solution that is not into 4 figures {black}:scared: Thanks!
Mileage?
Thought I would answer my own question. I had a bad front right hub which would not completely stay unlocked. Forward was ok-no noise. But back up stop and change to drive-pop and clunk. New hubs-->No clunk
Thanks for posting back with the fix!
When did you last change your transmission fluid and filter? It's 19 years old. Supposed to be done every 30-50,000 miles.
T nLess than 6 month ago. It was a fluid change but not the filter
