Sluggish 1996 GMC Safari

Scotty.  I have both a 1994 and a 1996 GMC Safari vans. Both are V-6 with Auto trans. Both are approaching 270,000 miles. Both run great and have been trouble free - except I had to replace the fuel pump on the '96 a couple of years ago. According to the VIN's, both have the same engine. The '94 has plenty of get up 'n go, but the '96 has always been a bit sluggish - even before the 'Service Engine' light started going on and off intermittently over a year ago. Now it always stays on. I saw your video about cat converters recently. I'm thinking that may be a good place to start. Your thoughts?

I'm guessing those both have 4.3L, both throttle body?

At that mileage you might want to not only rebuild or swap out the distributors & do a full tune up but check your timing chain for slop. I had small block chevys (the 4.3 is based off of an sbc minus 2 cylinders) show considerable slop after 150k so imagine what yours might look like.

It might also be time to go through the throttle body but this is all on the speculation that you want them to last alot longer & remain efficient.

The entire tune up, timing chain, etc should only be a weekend job for you if you did the fuel pump yourself.

Thanks. Yes. Both with throttle body. Living in Ohio, I'll check it out when the weather warms up.
"I had small block chevys (the 4.3 is based off of an sbc minus 2 cylinders)" I've got a 305 ci with 350 turbo that came out of my brother's old Nova b4 he junked it. It's going into a '48 Chevy 2 dr Stylemaster I have - with a blown 6 cyl.

Since we have the same weather in CT (although you get it 2-3 days earlier), I'm guessing around early May😄 I have to wait for the warm-up myself & have a ton of stuff to do.

That '48 sounds like it'll be a gem, if you come across a cheap 350 in the meantime I'd go that route. 305s never wanted to hold up for me in heavier cars. The th350 on the other hand is always good.
That's gotta be what, 5-6k lbs of Chevy steel?

the 'Service Engine' light started going on and off

Scan it.

Then visit chevygmcvans.com

Thanks for the suggestion, Mountain Man.
