What should I do with my 1994 GMC Safari's engine?

We've owned this GMC Safari since 2001. Our mechanic is saying that parts for the van aren't being made anymore but we're fishy about that. I know that the best thing we should do right now is to change out all the gaskets and clean it but should we replace the engine with a different one in the future? Are there any other engines that fit in the van that will provide any improvements in terms of handling or gasoline mileage or no?

Did you check online? I find this very difficult to believe.

I can't see that being worthwhile.

Some people put a small block V8 in there. It takes a bit of work and know-how. Probably not worth it at this point, unless it's a hobby/passion of yours.

What is the issue, or why do you want replace or overhaul the engine?

I've found sever sites that sold parts for the van so I'm sure he's just trying to take advantage. The van means a lot to me so I want to keep it for as long as possible.

We could probably give you much better advice if you gave us more info - what engine? what's wrong with the current engine? does it leak oil or coolant? bad head gasket? any codes? what's the compression on the cylinders? good oil pressure? These are the things that tell us what it would take to fix/should you just replace it.

these vans came with one engine. A 4.3L Vortec V6.

Engine-wise, nothing's wrong other than it being 29 years old. I just wanted to know all my options. Right now, my father and I are leaning towards cleaning it up and changing the gaskets.

If the original engine is worn out, you may want to check out this site for some ideas:

If nothing is wrong with the engine, don't fix something that isn't broke.  You're doing something right when a 21 year old van runs good without major repairs.  Are you up to date with recommened scheduled maintenance in the owner's book such as spark plugs, anti-freeze, transmission fluid & filter, brake fluid, power steering fluid, engine oil & filter?  Don't forget to inspect belts, suspension, steering mechanism, joints, shocks, differential fluid, wheel bearings. Check electrical system for discolored and/or chaffed wires, corroding connections inside and out.

This van turns 30. We're more or less up to date with the maintenance. We plan on just changing the gaskets and giving the engine a thorough cleaning.

My mistake on the age. I thought 2001 was the model year of the van.

Like jdavidm said: If it aint broke, don't fix it.

The engine will tell you when it needs something.

that 4.3 is a pretty good engine. why not just get a junkyard one and rebuild it for the time when yours is shot?

If the van has sentimental value to you, then sure fix it up.

I'm driving a 95 and feel much the same as you. Yeah, I know it isn't worth much but ,,,,, It's paid for!

Seems like you have three choices -

1.  Rebuild your engine.

2.  Get a remanufactured engine.

3.  Sell it and get something else.
