I have a 2007 Honda Pilot with 150,000 miles. Today I heard a whining sound cooking from the area near the alternator and power steering pump. There is also smoke coming from the same area. There is also a oil/electric burning smell.
I tested the alternator cranking test and it wouldn’t register. I tested the alternator charging system and it showed low.
What do you think could cause the smoke? Could it need a new alternator?

It could be the bad alternator.
Do you also see any oil leak? I would check the power steering system by lifting the car.
No oil leak and the whining sound goes away when I unplug the alternator.
