Hey guys I need recommendations on transmission fluid change on my hundayi sonata gls 2014
This car is my daily driver as compared to other cars i have, i use this car to take my mom to work and sister to school and my self to work and gym
I drive this car Daily like 7 days a week as compared to my other cars
My car is about to reach 60k miles and I got from other owner who I didn't know changed fluid or not
I was talking with my friend if he can do it ... he said no and he didn't f around with tranny
Then I asked couple of other places
Christian brothers were asking $245 for tranny fluid changed and were using valoline full synthetic
Brake blus $150 for full synthetic
I talk to Dealer... I ask them simple questions they couldn't even answer that but asking $185
so ... what's the question exactly?
You should replace the fluid.
It’s SUPER simple to do on a Hyundai-Kia conventional automatic.
preparation:
- Wait for the car to cool off
- turn on the engine
- shift your lever though all position twice and wait in each gear for 10 seconds (P,R,N,D,+,-)
- shut down the engine
- remove the ATF dipstick, inspect level and condition (if dark replace again in 10k-20k miles)
the procedure:
- remove the oil drain plug
- wait for it to drain completely
- install the drain plug
- install dipstick
- remove fill plug
- fill as much ATF as has came out
- install fill plug
- measure ATF level using the dipstick in accordance with manual instructions and adjust.
after the procedure
- If ATF level is correct, go on a short drive.
- (most shops don’t do this step but it’s important for the car to last)
- enable the adaptive learning procedure (D->N->D->N->D->N->D->N->D waiting AT LEAST 5 seconds in each gear - you’ll know it worked if it shifts like crap for the first couple times)
- Accelerate through all gears at a very small throttle opening (<20%) and coast down with no throttle back though all gears about 5 times.
Use OEM fluid! Other fluid that lists Hyundai ATF SP-IV should be alright but I’d only recommend using OEM.
Perform fluid replacement every 20k (city driving) 30k (mixed) if only used on the highway 40k is permissible with frequent fluid quality inspections (using the dipstick, it’s on all conventional automatic Hyundais until 2017 - if it’s getting dark brown, replace regardless of mileage)
Do not go to a chain shop if you want it done correctly.
You can check the FAQ for the caveats around changing transmission fluid. At 60K you're about at the point with a conventional automatic trans where it should be done.
In general it is best to stay away from dealers and chain shops and either do the work yourself or find a good independent shop to do it.
I can’t believe the prices dealerships and mechanics charge for transmission oil fluid exchange. That’s how they make their money.
