Hi Scotty,
I have a 2011 Lexus IS350 All Wheel Drive and here is my situation—my steering wheel shakes between 65 - 75 MPH. The vehicle only has 63,000 miles. I’ve had the front tires replaced and balanced. I’ve had an all wheel alignment, but the problem persists. Tie rods, CV axels, brakes, and calipers appear in good condition. My question is, what can be causing my steering wheel to shake? Any thoughts or guidance, please. Thank you.
Possibly you have a bent rim? If you rotate the front tires to the back does the problem persist?
Great suggestion. None of the 4 rims are bent. The front tires went to the back. The rear tires came to the front and two new tires were balanced and mounted today, but the steering wheel shaking issue persists. I should add that this issue is isolated to the front right because I can feel the steering wheel shaking and a rattling noise is heard inside the cabin. I can see the glove compartment rattle, too. I’m wondering if it’s the CV axle, control arm, or other suspension component. Any thoughts?
Bent CV axle? I've experienced vibration from bad U-joints and bent driveshafts on rear-drive cars, but front driveshafts are a different animal. Probably still worth checking. That car has low mileage but is old enough that examining the suspension bushings would probably be a good idea if that has not already been done. Are there any other clues, like the vibration changing with acceleration or deceleration, or changing when moving the steering wheel?
I checked the CV axle and it doesn’t appear bent. I took a look at all of the front right suspension components and steering components, but no luck. Nothing is leaking or appears broken. I mostly feel like the steering wheel vibration at highway speeds. I can feel it starting at 55 MPH and it gets worse the faster I go. It’s even more apparent between 65 MPH - 75 MPH. So I would say the vibration gets worse with acceleration. The steering doesn’t shake when I brake. I don’t feel the steering wheel shake within city limit speeds. It’s really odd and it’s only happening on the front right tire. At this point, I’m thinking about taking it to a Lexus dealership, but not looking forward to the $175 per hour diagnostic fee.
Since the vibration doesn't appear until you're going pretty fast it would be a slight bend in the axle if that's what's going on, maybe not readily noticeable to the naked eye. It would probably need to be checked at speed. I don't know how you'd do that on a modern all-wheel-drive vehicle. Scotty has demonstrated equipment that can be used to place sensors that trace noises in a car. Maybe something similar is available for tracing vibration problems?
Yes, the vibration doesn’t appear until I reach highways speed, so it could be the axle. Maybe something exists that traces vibration problems. Thank you for helping.
keep all your related posts together please. Merging topics.
Hi, this was an unrelated topic, as I have recently experienced issues unrelated to this previous post.
Has this car ever been in a wreck?
No, the car has not ever been in a wreck.
Assuming you got a ‘good’ front end alignment & balancing, I’d start to check the wheel bearing & CV axle as Chuck mentioned. Also wiggle the other front end parts in that corner to check for any play. If you can’t do it yourself, I’d recommend visiting another, reputed front end shop, to diagnose what’s going on. All the best!
I will have the wheel bearing and CV axle checked. I will definitely have a reputable front end shop diagnose what’s going on. Thank you for helping.
No worries & please keep us posted with their diagnosis.
It turned out to be the rear right wheel, which was bend and the tire was out of round so I bought a refurbished wheel and also installed 4 new tires and the shaking has gone away.
Excellent! Thanks for keeping us posted. Glad it was straightforward.
Hi all,
I own a 2011 Lexus IS350 AWD with 65,000 miles on it. I am trying to identify a squeaking noise coming from my front left suspension system. I have included a video so you guys can hear it to try to identify what it could be. I was thinking it could be the strut mount, the strut arm, or something else? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

spray some lube at all the joints one at a time. When the squeak stops, you found the worn out part.
Hi all,
I had gotten aftermarket wheels but experienced vibration in my steering wheel so I picked up an OEM set of Lexus wheels for my 2011 IS 350 All Wheel Drive. In short, after installing the wheels, road force balance, and new tires, the vibration issue remains. I have uploaded two videos for help on what is causing my steering wheel vibration between 65 -75 mph. I have new brake pads, rotors, and OEM lug nuts. Trying to resolve this issue once and for all. I am running staggered set within specs so this isn’t an issue. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have uploaded two videos - one of all wheels spinning and the other of the rear axles in which I am hearing a sound coming from both rear CV axles.
