Scotty, I have a 99 4Runner SR5 automatic with 240,000 miles on it. I am trying to change out the rear differential fluid in it and the filler plug is stripped. Should I try to use a tap and die or could I fill via the breather hole in the top? Also, what’s the best way to get my rear axle bearings switched out. Thanks so much!
I got it! A blow torch and a well placed pair of vice grips did the job! Thanks for the tips, guys!
Well done!
Thanks for the update.
I would weld a nut to the head of the plug, put a socket on it and back it out. If you don't have access to welding, I would put the torch to it and grab it with either large Channel Locks or Vice Grips. The heat of a torch can do miraculous things, what with the expansion coefficient of steel being what it is.
A photo is worth a thousand words. Can you please clarify ...
The threads on the plug are stripped? Or the recess in the head of the plug where you put your tool is rounded?

The head of my filler plug is almost rounded. I have tried to grip it with pretty much anything that I can grip it with.
Are you using the correct tool?
I would just extract it by using any means necessary, and then just replace the plug. There's a variety of methods.
left-handed drill bits, extractors & easy-outs, using a hammer and chisel etc.
I have considered trying to use a torch to heat it up. I am getting ahold of an extractor socket to try as well.
Use a Time Sert kit to fix the botched threads. This is a floating rear axle and the shaft assembly needs to be taken to a machine shop to have a new bearing pressed (hydraulically) into position.
I'm fairly sure it's semi-floating
I stand corrected, thanks.
