I have a 2000 Honda Accord V6 automatic transmission with 144,000 miles. I bought the car with 127,000 miles and changed the timing belt at that time. We have had the car for 8 year but only put 17,000 miles on it. My mechanic suggests replacing the timing belt due to age, not mileage. We live in Phoenix where we have very hot summers. Should I replace it?
At 8 years old it would be best to replace it, especially if that's an interference engine. (You'll probably find that Honda specified the replacement interval in terms of age as well as mileage.)
If your engine allows you to take a peak at the belt, take a peak.
I know on the Accord Inline 4 engines, you can take a peak by removing the timing belt cover at the side of the engine. I can’t remember if I had to remove the valve cover or not for access.
If it is cracking, or starting to crack, probably a good change it.
The correct word is Peek.
Ugh. I know that too. That’s for the heads up.
