Anyone know how these cars whole up over time? I have been thinking about getting one for my wife (she's a speed demon). Of course people beat the hell out of them, but just wanted to know if I find a good one will it last?

They are good cars if taken care of but realize that they are not fast especially with automatic transmission. They look fast though.

Yeah, they're good cars.  They are vulnerable to bad tunes from people wanting to get rid of the infamous "torque dip" and the usual tuner/modder shenanigans.

But they're very simple cars, and given the modest HP numbers, they don't generate a lot of stress on the drive train.  The FA20 engine is a real peach - great, reliable motor with few flaws.

Down side is, like a lot of Subarus, they are not luxury cars and tend to use a lot of cheap screws and fasteners and things.  But the upside is that there isn't an expensive part on the car to replace (especially with a manual gear box), and they are super easy for DIY repairs and service.  Even if there is a problem, it probably won't break the bank.

And, by the way, they are a great car for a "speed demon" - they handle better than they accelerate, and are very forgiving at the limit.  So it would be tough to wreck it, as sports cars go.

PS: don't forget to expand your search to include Scion FRS and Toyota 86, which are all the same car.

See below:  just be sure to have a good, independent mechanic like a Scotty thoroughly check the vehicle out (some could have been driven hard or lived a rough life or tuned even), hook up his fancy scan tool, road test, and examine all the scan tool data for any issues and give his OK before you pull the trigger.
