Hi guys, I just bought some new wheels for my 2009 subie. The tires on the front part have close to no tread. but the rear ones have close to no usage at all. My father asked me to just put the wheels on when I told him they can damage the AWD system without beliving me. He keeps saying that the AWD system will be okay and that I should not worry to much about it. Idk what to belive please help, this is urgent cause the car will be going on a 700 mile trip in about a week or so

If the tires have no tread, they're going to be dangerous whether they're on the front or the back.  Forget about AWD, what about your life?

For AWD, you really need the same tires (front and rear) with same tread wear on all 4 to mitigate chances of wear on the AWD system.

But having worn tires with no tread and going on 700 mile road trip, what can possibly go wrong?  I would not risk driving on those tires.

C’mon mate, just buy 4 new tyres. You don’t us to tell you the obvious..

I mean these are summer tires but I know that the front ones have less tread thant the rear ones. I am concerned about my safety too which will be solved in case I convince him to switch the tires. But I do not know if I should leave the tires with different tread depth on my subie. I am scared that it might break the central diff but also be a safety hazard. The diff concerns me more tho.

Thank you guys for helping me figure this out. I do have 4 summer tires from the previous owner. I did warn dad that it can lead to wear of the awd system and that it can be expensive as all hell and he said that nothing will happen and called me a fool for beliving that the car with uneven tread on the front and the rear can wear out the awd (he never had an awd car only FWD and RWD and he called me a fool for finding that on the internet). I then got confused and did not know what to belive. The subie is at the moment on the uneven tread tires, I hope the awd won't be damaged while standing still due to the unevenness as we speak....

Are the summer tyres still in good shape (age/tread depth)? They all need to be almost equally worn, or else you risk damaging the AWD system. PS. Regarding your dad, just show him the maintenance section of your owner’s manual. I’m pretty sure it’s mentioned clearly in there, regarding the need to replace all 4 tyres. All the best!
