sudden acceleration

I am the one and only original owner of a 1998 Honda CR-V 4WD EX Automatic that currently has 92,700K miles.

I've kept it in meticulous condition all these years and have it serviced often throughout the year. I haven't had any major issues with my car to date.

After an extremely frightening experience the other day.

While parked in a grocery store parking lot, this is the sequence of events:

  • After turning on the ignition, I put my foot on the brake pedal
  • Then I put my car in <Reverse>
  • Then I released the parking brake, and took my foot off the brake pedal

My car then accelerated VERY fast in Reverse ~20 ft, nearly hitting another parked car!

I immediately slammed on the brake pedal to stop the car, avoiding any shoppers or cars. Crisis averted!

FYI, my floor mat is no where near either the brake or gas pedals. And it definitely wasn't driver error!

Any ideas what caused this sudden, unexpected (and frightening) acceleration?

Appreciate your help!

Probably a stock throttle. Do my video how to make your car run better with a little spray cleaner on YouTube. The throttle could have gotten carbon in it now. If it's not that then odds are since such an old car your cable itself and he's going to need replacing that it's worn and it's dragging internally. My cars don't do that cuz they don't use cables but yours is old enough. It should still have an accelerator cable in it

Thanks VERY MUCH, Scotty! I always enjoyed watching you on KHOU in Houston!
