Hey, Scotty,
I own a 2005 Toyota Corolla XRS (2ZZ-GE engine with the 6-speed manual transmission).
I've noticed an oddity while driving that is sporadic, but will always happen at least once during my commute.
When I am approaching a stop or a slow-down (whether coming off the interstate or preparing for a red-light/stop sign) I place the car in neutral. While the car is in neutral and decelerating, it will sometimes dip and surge in the RPMs; while it's at idle speed of about 750-800rpm, it will dip to about 500rpm, seemingly "catch itself", jump to about 2,000rpm, and finally settle back at idle speed (noting, this dip and surge all takes place within about 1 second, so it's almost like a hiccup).
The interesting part is that this ONLY HAPPENS while the car is moving in neutral; it NEVER HAPPENS while stopped in idle (which it idles like a brand new car -- very pleasing), so it almost leads me to believe that a sensor is going bad, though there are no codes.
I have a brand new OEM alternator installed as well, though I replaced the pulley for a larger diameter one, so maybe the alternator is putting out less than it's supposed to since it rotates fewer times overall?
Please help!!!
All the best,
Korby
All right to begin with that's not a good practice and it is illegal in the United States it's illegal to drive a car in neutral. It also can eventually as the age confuse the computer control system and make it surge up and down because the computer knows the car is moving but it's in neutral so that really screws around with the idle setting that the computer does
Hey, Scotty,
Thank you for the response!
I taught myself stick, so didn't know there was a protocol. So, you'd recommend shifting down sequentially (6,5,4,3,2,1,N) when slowing to a stop? Would I finally place it in neutral only from first gear?
