If you’re going to go off-road often, I’d actually recommend a Subaru. But either the RAV4 & CR-V will last a really long time.

Test drive them all & pick the one you like. For longevity RAV4 > CR-V > Forester.

Good luck!

im not going off road

I would also consider the Toyota 4Runner.

I would like to add, first choice goes to RAV4 unless you need the offroading capabilites of the 4Runner.

OP said in a follow up post in this thread he won’t be off-roading.

or even the first generation Toyota Venza

Both are good choices. Just avoid model years that have serious issues. I would prefer the RAV4.

For model years that had issues see below - under our Car Buying sticky:

what year would you recommend of a Rav4?

@ben303 MY2016-2018 if the budget allows.

i cannot afford those years but thanks

@ben303 Did you see Kerem’s answer (model years 2009-2012 if on a tight budget)?

+1 for Subaru, RAV4 and 4Runner.  Subies are really popular in Colorado, though with open diffs and no low range they are limited to easier forest service roads.  Ditto for RAV4 and CRV.  Adequate for most people, but if I was moving there I’d get a 4Runner.

For something a little older but more character, look for a TJ with a straight 6, but I wouldn’t use that as my daily.

Trails in Colorado are often narrow and have tight switchbacks. Wide vehicles with long wheelbases aren’t so good there.

if i were to get a RAV4 what is a good year to buy so i don't have issues?

If you are on a budget, 2009-2012, if you want something newer, 2016-2018. Its a situation of later year of the generation the better. Good luck!

I've been to the mountains in Colorado to the back country; camping, fishing etc...some of those roads are quite rough. We had a 1988 Pathfiner (back when Nissan made good stuff). and also went with a friend's 4-runner. Getting to some of those spots was rough in rugged suvs. I couldn't see taking anything less than a 4-runner. Don't know how a unibody small suv would hold up.

For longevity (which you wanted) avoid those. Stick to the RAV4 if your budget allows.

What year is best ??
