I HAVE A 2004 PONTIAC GRAND AM. AND AS YOU KNOW, G.M. SHUT DOWN THAT DIVISION OF ITS PRODUCTION LINE. MY PROBLEM IS THIS, G.M.  INSTALLED A ANTI-THEFT  SYSTEM WHEN THEY FIRST PRODUCED THE CAR. UNFORTUNATELY NOW, I DO NOT HAVE THE ORIGINAL KEY THAT CAME WITH THE CAR, SO IT WONT START BASED UPON  MY GENERIC KEY  NOT BEING PART OF THE ORGINAL COMPUTERS CODE, SORT OF SPEAK. WHAT I UNDERSTAND IS THAT THE ORGINAL  COMPUTER,KEY AND IGNITION SWITCH MUST ALL MATCH  IN ORDER TO GET THE VECHILE TO START. THIS WAS AN ANTI-THEFT DETERRENT  THAT  GENERAL  MOTORS INSTALLED ON MANY OF THEIR CARS THAT YEAR OF PRODUCTION. I CAN NOT GET MY CAR TO START, BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO GO PASS THIS COMPUTER GLITCH, AND POSSIBLY RE-PROGRAM IT. I CAN NOT AFFORD ANOTHER VECHILE, AND I REALLY NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO. I WAS TOLD TO BRING IT INTO A GM TECHICIAN II, AFTER I BUY A NEW COMPUTER, KEY, AND IGNITION SWICTH AND HAVE THEM RE-PROGRAM IT, BUT THAT IS  WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. PLEASE HELP.. THANK YOU.

If you have no keys for the original car, you would need to go through a lot of hoops to get it to work.

Scotty just did a video on this. Here you go:

A competent GM dealer or any automotive locksmith should be able to get into the computer, clear out any keys that are still programmed to the car, and then program a new one for you. Look at your key, if there's a slightly raised, rectangular area at the head of the key, it's a transponder key. I had a problem getting a new key to program at the hardware store's key reproducer with my 1999 Ranger, the key wouldn't transfer its code. I took it to my dealer and a third key had already been programmed, which I had, but neither of the factory keys were with the truck. They fixed the problem.

yes Pontiac is no longer. But GM used the same system on all their vehicles. The parts are the same too.
