Thumping and knocking noise and steering wheel shaking when idling at stop light

Hello Scotty, My name is Andrew.  I am a loyal fan of your channel.  I have a Nissan Xtrail -2006 (Canadian version); which has a QR25DE 4 cyldn engine.  This little SUV is maintained regularly, and recently I have changed the motor oil with M1 synthetic 5W-30, trainy oil using Vavoline MAx-Life Multi-V, and power sterling fluid, and cleaned the elect. control butterfly valve as well.  The car seemed running fine and the power restored.  However, when the car is engaged with the auto transmission, or stopped at traffic light, for example, there's a very annoying thumping or knocking noise coming from the engine; which you can feel the roughness/shaking on the sterling wheel. If I put the transmission on neutral, then the shaking is almost not there......  What would be the issue other than the deteriorated motor mounts??  If this is the case, there are 4 motor mounts on this vehicle, which axis do you think would be likely the culprit??  Please advise.  Thanks.

Is this the 4 speed torque converter automatic transmission?

Yes, It is. It;s the "famous" Jetco trannie......

It's very similiar with Sentra SE.....(same engine and tranny

I’d check them all on a 15yr old vehicle.

Also, I’d check all your transmission mounts too.

Lastly, if they’re all okay, it may be the torque converter wearing out (if you’ve got the 4speed TC auto).

Hi Scotty, I'd suspect it's the motor/transmission mounts. It used to be a highway car, and it's been driving in the city for the pass 6 years. (my wife is driving it)
It's also got close to 193000KM on it. It's been a dependable little vehicle, other than the thumping/shaking noise. The body is not as rigid as the RAV4 though......

Hi again Scotty, if it's indeed the motor mounts, where would you recommended to get the replacement parts cheaper??  Other than ordering from Autozone.....? {black}

Also @mountainmanjoe may be able to guide you towards Canadian specific auto part suppliers.

Hi Scotty, I forgot to mention that the steering wheel shaking phenomena sometime is not that bad, but other times, especially when the engine is cold, seemed happens more often.  Any more suggestions?  Thanks.

I would say if it is still doing it in neutral but reduced or sitting at a light it may not be mounts, sounds more like torque converter to me. Even with broken mounts it will clunk when going into gear, but should not be constantly shaking when sitting still. I’ve seen loose bolts that connect the torque convertor to the flywheel before that caused this same type of behavior.

Thank you for your input Thumpy.  In that case that you've mentioned, was it a huge job to fix it?

Unfortunately, on my little X-Trail, it's got the inferior Jetco transmission system, which I've heard other owners have the same issue......

It wasn’t that bad, Car in question was rear wheel drive with an inspection plate on the tranny bell housing. Was able to access the flywheel/converter bolts easily. I know there is an inspection plate/dust cover on your model with a manual transmission, I’m not sure if the AT models have same type of thing. I’ll see what I can dig up for ya.

Oh, one more thing, in my case, the engine does not made the thumping/shaking when it's in neutral, only when the tranny is in "Drive" and the car is stopped.  (ie. in front of a red light).........  The thumping noise is at a very minimum when the car is in neutral or park, which I am not to fuzzy about it.

Does it do it sitting in Reverse?

Yes, it does. Especially when the engine is cold....(first thing in the morning....)

Definately motor mounts id say. Seen it before.  They're really bad if it's doing that
