Time to scrap Toyota Cressida?

Topic starter

My elderly mother has been facing problems with her 1989 Toyota Cressida.

In the family since new. 3.0 inline 6 cylinder, 270, 556 miles.

Car couldn't be moved  when D was selected after sitting five days. After letting it idle for about two minutes and restarting the vehicle, the transmission works normally.

Only happens when the car sits for more than a day.

What could be the issue here?

Transmission fluid was last changed October 2019. Car's been properly maintained with transmission fluid being changed every 40,000 miles.

The issue could be that the transmission is wearing out. When is the last time it was serviced? (For that matter how often have fluid and filter been changed over the last 34 years?) Does it have enough fluid?

Nonetheless age and mileage take their toll. If fluid is in good condition and at the proper level the transmission would need to be diagnosed by an expert. Or, just drive it until it stops working entirely. (Cost to repair would most like exceed the car's value by a large margin.) Maybe try some Lucas additive which might help temporarily.
