Timing cover reseal

I recently took my 2007 Toyota Matrix, 100k miles, automatic into the dealership to give it a good checkup since I just hit 100k miles. While there, they told me my timing cover needed to be resealed due to it leaking oil. While they did point out a very minor pool of oil below the engine, they agreed this was not an immediate problem for me and it might be another 1-3 years before this becomes serious. Nonetheless, they quoted me ~$3k if I wanted to fix it. Needless to say, I decided to forgo the service.

To date, oil does not appear to excessively leak from the engine (the car is parked in my garage and I’ve never seen any oil on the garage floor) and the car runs just fine.

  1. Do you think it’s worth having the timing cover resealed at some point?
  2. Would you recommend any products like BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak that seal leaks (vs having the timing cover resealed)?

Stay away from the dealer, get a second opinion and price from a good independent shop, and definitely steer clear of snake oil like "BlueDevil".
