Are Headlights on New Cars Too Bright?

Scotty, do you agree headlights on newer cars are far too bright to oncoming drivers? I live in Austin, TX, and driving down 2 lane roads in the country at night has become hazardous, with Cadillac SUVs super-bright headlights making the road disappear in front of me.

If they're adjusted properly and are pointing in the correct direction they shouldn't be blinding at all.

A lot of modern cars come with HBA (Highway Beam Assist) and that does prevent blinding.

Eventually, we will all need super-duper bright headlights to compensate for the blinding LED's on newer cars and trucks.

Totally agree with the OP. I live in the countryside in Britain where our roads are not as wide as America and other countries. Sometimes I go out at 3:00am and come back at night, and there's no street lights on the country lanes, and I get completely dazzled by morons.

Then you get people with their full beams on either intentionally or not on the motoryway/freeway. I think it's a tactic to bully the car in front. They typically tailgate a car and force them to move aside in the fast lane.

But these white halogen lights or wahtever they are are too bright. I think they're set up on auto settings so don't know why the full beams are on instead of dipped. Unless it's on purpose. Often I get people with their front fog lights on as well. I saw one the other day coming down a hill merging on the opposite motorway and the lights were like something from Star Wars for hundreds of feet ahead.

Police arrest you over here for looking at someone the wrong way (if that person thinks it caused offence) but put everyone at risk on the motorway and they don't care.

I read a couple of articles on IIHS about headlights in general. IIHS is urging automakers to make better headlights to reduce the amount of fatal accidents that happen in terms of vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to pedestrian, and when a vehicle hits an object like a tree or a pole. Also to put in perspective, not everybody can drive good in the night and with very dim headlights, it can be difficult to drive.
