I have a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 6 cyl. automatic 4-dr Prerunner. I have kept maintenance up religiously. It has over 457k miles. Engine light has been on and off for years. Each time I get it checked, I try to fix the problem. This last time, it was an engine coil, but then light came back on. Mechanic says it needs a fuel injector replaced. Cleaners haven't fixed it. If I let it idle for maybe 5-10 min. it will start to stall when I put it in gear. I think I messed it up by sitting in a state park with the A/C on for over an hour, just to get out of the house where I was living. It has been doing this rough idle ever since. It leaks a little oil at the gasket (been replaced once before, years ago.) Radiator leaks, gas gauge drops to E if it gets below quarter tank, but other than that, it runs FANTASTIC. Any ideas about the rough idle situation?
How old are the spark plugs? Filters? PCV valve? Have you checked for vacuum leaks? What do your fuel trims look like? You're dealing with 21-year-old high-mileage parts so almost anything goes.
Get it scanned for codes and go from there.
