[Solved] Toyota 2ZR FE Engine reliability opinions

Hi! I bought my wife a 2013 Toyota Corolla with 37,000 miles (!), and I had tried to do my due diligence to find a year model that had few complaints and would be reliable. I bought it through CarMax, so I have a month to return it if it isn't what we want.

Today, I read somewhere online that this 2ZR FE engine has oil consumption problems, etc. (!!!) After owning one of the terrible 2AZ FE engines and dealing with the oil chugging problems on that one, I am nervous about this one...

Is this a reliable engine?

THANKS!!

For the most part they are reliable. They were known to burn a little oil at higher mileage but nothing extreme.

Thanks!

Did you have the rest of the car inspected thoroughly, by a professional mechanic? If not, get it done now ASAP, while your return window is still open..

Good idea! They did their 125 point inspection, but I think getting it checked out by a pro would be better.

Yeah who knows how reliable their inspection is. All the best!

How often was the oil changed on that Corolla?  Is there a detailed service history for it?  See below to shed some better light on the oil consumption that Toyota engines are seeing - from Toyota Master Mechanic The Car Care Nut:

I asked for records, but they said they didn't have records of maintenance from the prior owner. They said when they obtained the car, it showed signs of proper maintenance. Thanks for the video! I'll watch it!!
