We're in the market for a new car (bad time i know). however since everyone is making CVTs and true automatics are being phased out, who makes the best CVT between Toyota or Honda? the models we're looking at are the corolla and the civic.

Nowadays, Definitely Toyota.

Both Honda and Toyota have been making CVTs for over two decades (the oldest Honda CVT I could find is on the late 90s HR-V and on Toyota they've been making them since 2000 for JDM and European models)

But, unlike Toyota (except for some older designs like what's installed on the Corolla hatchback), Honda CVTs are still causing massive issues for owners while Toyota seems to have done a great job on the K120 launch gear CVT.

Just remember to change the fluid with the OEM spec every 25k-35k miles - they're not bad at all, but they're still weaker than a conventional automatic

(it's still unclear if the launch gear avoids internal slippage [as the cones are still spinning even when the mechanical first gear is engaged - the belt is just un-pinched], so it's still not the best gearbox to use in traffic jams or for 'sporty' driving.)

As far as I know neither have any real problems. I would refer to the mods on here for that cause I haven't seen any issues myself. I'm no fan of CVT's (I used to have a car with one, a 2007 dodge caliber with a Jatco, piece of trash), but those are the two companies that I imagine are on the better side in regard to them.
