Hello! I have a 2009 Matrix with 149K miles (base model 1.8) and no major problems over the past 7 years. However, about 1 month ago the engine was going bonkers and the mechanic said it needed a new ignition coil and spark plug in cylinder 2. It worked great after the repair, but then last week the engine started misfiring again! Took it back and it was now cylinder 3 that need a new ignition coil and plug. So, initially I was glad that they didn't go ahead and replace all 4 coils and plugs (saving me money) and just focused on the main cylinder problems. But now i'm worried it's just a matter of time until cylinder 1 and cylinder 4 will need repair. I've watched the videos and will tackle this issue myself. My question is... should I go ahead and replace coil and plug for cylinder 1 and 4 as preventative care, or wait until the engine misfires to replace? I have a scan tool and will use that to double check before repair. THANK YOU!
Yea, I would. Any bit of raw gas you can prevent from being dumped in exhaust, the better off your cats will be in the long run.
@hillbilly
thank you sir!
Yeah, especially if you take out-of-town trips. When will the other 2 coils and plugs act up - will it be at a convenient time? You can change the coils and plugs at a convenient time. Doing it will be easier than just about any car maintenance task you can do. (I own an 09 Matrix too)
@glen_stet
Ok, I agree it does seem fairly straightforward.
