Toyota Venza Engine Cuts Under Load

Hey guys, I have a 2011 Toyota Venza V6 AWD with 175,000kms (Canada) I'm having a problem currently with the engine cutting out when under load like passing on the highway or going up a steep hill. I can maintain highway speeds no problem, but if I pull out to pass the engine will lose all power for one second, then it cuts back in with full power for a second, then it cuts out again, then full power again, so on and so fourth until I take my foot off the throttle for a couple seconds while coasting. Then I can maintain speed again. It happens more often than it doesn't. Each time it cuts in or out it is instantaneous, throws you back in your seat sometimes, it's quite violent. The check engine light isn't on, and when the engine cuts power there is no change to the cluster, no warning lights flashing at all.

The very first time it happened I was running very low on fuel, gas station was closed and on a long drive in a snow storm. Long story. But I'm leaning towards I hurt the fuel pump by running it very low on fuel. Since then the rate of which it occurs has slowly increased.

Hope I explained the situation clearly, any input on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

Places to start:  has the fuel filter ever been changed?  Also, have you tested your fuel pressure?

I have only owned the vehicle for the last 10,000km, I haven't changed the filter myself but was planning to before buying parts. I don't have a way to check fuel pressure right now, I'll ask around to see if my friends have a kit

Thanks for the direction
