ToyotaCare - Oil Change

I recently went to my Toyota dealer to get a free oil change for my new 2021 Corolla.  They said that they would change my oil every 10,000 miles because its synthetic.  I asked if it came new with synthetic and she said yes.  I checked the owners manual and the oil grade is: GF-5 and viscosity is:  SAE 0W-20.  However, it doesn't say if it's synthetic or not.  Does anyone have any information about this?  Thanks

Any oil that has 0 as a low temperature viscosity is synthetic. If you want to keep the car, have the oil change every 5000 miles.

Ten thousand miles oil change is only good if you don’t like your new car and thinking of getting rid of it relatively soon. Otherwise, 5,000 miles or one year if you don’t drive more than that in an year!

Also, heads up! Fluids, … fluids need to be changed periodically if you do like your car: … transmission, coolant, brake fluid, any gearbox, all grease-requiring joints! Read your owners manual, … read fine print! Car will last a very long time if you address these basics!

GF-5 is now obsolete and replaced with GF-6.

Anyhow, synthetic is better to use in general but you can use synthetic or non-synthetic as long as it has the same viscosity as what is stated in the manual and meets Toyota’s specifications.  Also, for longevity it’s recommended to change the oil every 5,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.  I would closely follow that.

Pretty much all new cars call for synthetic engine oil.

5000 miles even with synthetic oil?  I think its 5000 miles for conventional oil, so there would be no cost savings with synthetic?

depends on driving conditions. a 5k miles is a conservative interval (lots of hot, city driving)
