Transfer case issue?

I drive a 2016 Infiniti Qx60 with 100k miles. When turning left or right at a light or driving under 10 mph, my car skips. Also when the car is in motion going over 25mph it makes a whirling noise like a bad wheel bearing. My mechanic told me it was my transfer case. We tried installing two used ones but the same problem occurs. He suggested i get a brand new one. What should I do? 🆘 Help!

Find another mechanic who actually knows what he's doing.

Thanks doc

It sounds like your center differential is locking up, making the vehicle "skip" while turning since a tire has to break loose from the road - front and rear tires are rotating at different speeds and something has to give. This subjects the drivetrain to excessive strain which is likely causing the 'whirling' noise at higher speeds. If not corrected this can cause serious damage. (It's like driving a part-time 4WD vehicle on dry pavement.)

Chances are that you have a computer-controlled transfer case. So the fault may well lie in the electronics rather than the transfer case itself. Definitely get a second opinion from a good independent mechanic who can diagnose its operation with a fancy bidirectional scan tool.

Thanks for the response Chuck. Was told in addition of my transfer case, the magnetic coupling in the differential was causing the skipping. He found out once he unplugged the piece, the violent skipping when turning went away. Also suggested my left front axle to be replaced as well. So far the damages have amounted to $5600. Long live Nissan 🥹

Ack, that's crazy! Disconnecting the magnetic coupling will have left you with an open differential but at least it's not skipping and straining any more.

Do you have four identical tires on all four corners? All with the same amount of wear?

I do
