Hi Scotty. I have a 1998 Jaguar Xj8 that’s having a transmission problem. I bought it from a friend and a day later I was at a stoplight and when I tried to accelerate again, it slipped and banged into gear. It gave me a gearbox fault message and it’s stuck in a limp mode now. 87k miles only. Gave codes p1730 for gear control malfunction. Everyone is telling me it’s a bad “clutch a drum” what could it be?

Some possible clues here, they point to internal mechanical transmission faults. Apparently the "A Drum" is a problem in those transmissions and an upgraded part is available:
