hi scotty my question is about a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. im trying to get a transmission fluid reading. i put the ds-cjdt1 dipstick in after following all the instructions and it appears the reading is entirely too much fluid. i just bought this car used. can that be right i had 80mm of fluid at 140 degrees. according to the chart i should have 42mm. the car runs pretty well tho occasionally 3rd throws you forward alittle bit but its not a jerk its pretty smooth but it just puts some acceleration. the fluid does appear to have some wear to it but its still a translucent red on the dipstick. i know i should shorten my question but ive never used this site. but i love your videos. anyway you can help me understand why it would read so high when the chart says it should be lower. why would so much fluid be in it? 81k miles. seems like im doing something wrong because double the fluid seems excessive. i dont exactly have time to sit at the dealership and i certainly dont want to pay them to tell me its fine. i want to change it which i know im capable of but i have never had a transmission that requires you to jump through hoops to get the reading... is it normal for most of the mm to get a little wet or is the top of the wet the reading you go with?
Warm it up, be on level ground.
Thank you for responding. I just went outside put down a leveler on the ground in my driveway and it's pretty spot on. The transmission was 140° it has a temperature gauge in the dash. I drove around the neighborhood untill it hit 140 then pulled in and checked it while it was running.. So I guess the conclusion may be its over filled
Use a infrared thermometer and point at the transmission pan you’ll get a better temp reading. Also a lot of Jeeps you have to have it in neutral to check the fluid, so check on that. The dipstick that you probably got is really long and very flexible so make sure you don’t push it down really hard to where the end of it touches the pan and curls up. Just push down slowly until it stops then look at the numbers on it and compare it to the chart. The most important part is getting the trans to the right temp. BTW I hate that Jeep did not put trans dipsticks in their vehicles for those years. What was the problem with just putting a good old fashion trans dipstick with cold and hot readings.
