Transmission fluid change with or w/filter change?

Topic starter

2020 Camry 4 cylinder 68k miles.

I looked at the manual and I don't see transmission fluid intervals, but I know on the Carfax there has not been a transmission fluid service of any sort. I asked a mechanic and they said it's better to just change the fluid now and do the fluid and filter at around 120k. Is this accurate? Another mechanic said it doesn't need fluid, but I know that's not true based on this forum and Scotty's recommendation.

Always change the filter when the fluid is changed. https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/howto/atf/#post-240677

@hixster "Some transmissions have an internal metal mesh screen which is not serviceable without removing the entire transmission unit. These transmissions are designed for fluid exchange only."

This is where I think this transmission becomes difficult to get the filter out. What do you think?

@jxyooj71 I agree. Camrys come with metal screens which themselves are not serviceable. The Car Care Nut has a video that addresses Toyota transmission filters (Please note: this only when the transmission has been serviced at proper intervals): https://youtu.be/jJr30r6RRgw?t=830

@hixster amazing! Thank you for this! I was a bit unsure because the filter isn't as serviceable as previous models were. I'll go ahead with changing the fluid tomorrow and when I hit 120k miles.
