Hello everyone from Italy ..I've got a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel with 85000km and I'm thinking about replacing the trans fluid..car has a Nag1 5 speed and my first choice was simply drain as much fluid I could, remove the pan, clean it,chance the filter and put all back together but today I called a Jeep official service and they told me that would be a partial work and they don't do it...they use a machine that works only with the same oil they would fill the tranny with,at a lower pressure than the working pressure and so they will be able to flush all the oil..they claim they have that machine since the times of the WJs..it is going to be expensive because of the price of the fluid and they will use a lot to push out the old one..
What do you guys think?
Thanks ,Andy.
Manual or Auto?
If auto ...
You have to ask yourself if your Jeep even requires a complete fluid replacement, because it may not be necessary. What does your fluid look like now? Likely after 85,000km (53k miles) it looks ok.
Also, keep in mind that Jeep makes more money from the machine service, so they are motivated to push it on everyone. What about the filter? It's important to change that, so does their service include it?
@dan has more experience with these things. Lets see what he says.
Good point, MMJoe about auto or manual, although I've never flushed a manual in my life.
@doc you never know these days
You're absolutely right, MMJoe. Absolutely!
BALONEY! Drain it, replace the filter as you said and refill with proper fluid to the proper mark when idling in park on a level surface at operating temperature. Tell the dealer to go scratch.
If you do three drain and fills, driving around for maybe 30 minutes between times, you'll have about 90% fresh fluid without having to worry about whether the stealership's flush machine is going to cause damage.
that could get very expensive. Have you seen the price of fluid for modern cars? It was over $100 per fill for mine.
Yikes! Since my cars are dinosaurs they use Dexron II or III (Dex/Merc). Valvoline Dex/Merc is available at Wal-Mart for about $14 for a 1-gallon jug (one drain and fill sequence). Sounds like yet another reason to stick with older models. What I do is a partial fluid change every other oil change, and a 3-part drain and fill plus replace the filter every 30K miles.
