[Solved] Truck recommendations

‘07 Ford Escape just got hit and totaled. Looking for something newer, preferably a truck.
looking at quarter ton and half ton, used as everyday driver and possibly some light hauling here and there.

Apart from the Tacoma, what are some good recommendations? If I decide on the half ton I want something with a V8, no point in a full size with a v6.

A 2014-2021 Tundra is probably your best bet. The 5.7 V8 is the best 8 cylinder engine you’ll find in recent production.

Beyond that, anything is gonna mean trade offs.  You wouldn’t necessarily be wrong to buy a Ford, GM, Ram, or Nissan Truck (I personally bought a 2022 GMC earlier this year) but you gotta do your homework to understand the ups and downs of the various models and power trains.

Good luck!

They're decent trucks. They were practically unchanged from 2005 to 2021 in the United States, so that should speak to their longevity and durability. They're like the 1998-2011 Ford Rangers. In that 12 year time frame, Ford only dropped or added a couple engine options, then made the sheet metal look like their big trucks. The transmission in the manual was the same unit from at least the early 90s, and the automatics were updated models from the 1980s. Nissan made something that worked and people bought, so they just kept building it, making minimal changes. I wouldn't buy the new Frontier until it's been out a few years, but that's me.

Most all US half tons have cylinder deactivation after 2006.

half ton, Toyota Tundra with V8 or Nissan Titan or Ford F150 (again with V8)

Not the newer Ford F-150 with the 3rd Gen (2018+ model year) Coyote V8 and questionable 10-speed auto. Model year 2021+ also has cylinder deactivation.

Good points @DayWalker.

What does everyone think about the Nissan Frontier’s specifically? I’ve heard they’ve always been decently reliable trucks if you don’t want to shell out the money for the Tacomas. I know there was a redesign in 2022 (or maybe 21?) so I know we don’t know too much about them yet. But as for 2010-2021, how have those faired?
